Volksbank PHD acquired the neighbouring Bankverein Werther — a regional institution with its own customer base and its own history. The strategic dilemma: another Volksbank was already active in the same location; a straightforward absorption under the Volksbank name would have violated the cooperative system's non-competition principle. The acquired brand had to continue as a standalone — under new ownership, with new positioning, without losing customers.
"We speak local."
The new brand claim — developed by Lünstroth
Lünstroth analysed the brand strengths of both institutions and identified the decisive common denominator: regional rootedness in the Teutoburg Forest as both a geographic and emotional anchor. This became the foundation of a positioning that did not diminish Bankverein Werther but explicitly framed its local decision-making advantage as a USP against national private banks. A new logo modernised the brand without sacrificing its recognition value. The new claim »We speak local.« compressed regionality and proximity into three words.
Bankverein Werther is preserved as a distinct brand within the group — with a positioning that names its local decision-making advantage explicitly, instead of treating regional proximity as a given. Logo and claim were introduced and have been in use since.
